Is That Lump in My Armpit a Cause for Concern?

Hi there, I’m a 16-year-old girl. A couple of years ago, I discovered a small lump in my armpit, slightly bigger than a pea, shortly after shaving. It became inflamed when I applied deodorant and was slightly uncomfortable, which is what drew my attention to it. Above the lump, there appeared to be a cyst-like area that oozed, though the lump itself felt deeper than the surface. Eventually, I stopped worrying about it, convincing myself it was just a harmless cyst. Now, upon checking it again, I’ve noticed there’s no pain, and I can’t identify a clear head on it anymore. It doesn’t feel overly firm or noticeable, and it seems to be a bit deeper unless I position my arm in a certain way. When I pull the skin tight, the lump doesn’t shift, but it moves easily when I gently push the skin aside. It hasn’t caused me any discomfort for the past three years, but I recently remembered it and began to wonder. Is this situation typical, or should I be concerned about it? :(

It's understandable to feel concerned about any lump, especially in an area like the armpit. Based on your description, it sounds like this lump could be a benign issue, such as a lymph node or a cyst that has settled over time. However, it's always good to keep an eye on any changes in your body.

Explanation: Lumps in the armpit can arise from a variety of causes, including lymph nodes reacting to infections, benign cysts, or sometimes folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles). The fact that it has been present for a few years without significant changes—like pain or noticeable growth—suggests it might not be a cause for immediate concern.

Next Steps:

  1. Self-Monitoring: Continue to observe the lump for any changes, especially in size, firmness, or the development of new symptoms such as pain or redness.

  2. Gentle Care: Avoid any irritants, such as strong deodorants or harsh shaving techniques, that could exacerbate inflammation in the area.

  3. When to Seek Attention: If the lump becomes painful, grows noticeably, or if you notice systemic symptoms like fever or unintentional weight loss, it would be wise to seek medical attention. These could indicate an infection or another condition that needs evaluation.

  4. Routine Check-Up: If you’re still worried or if it’s weighing on your mind, mention it at your next routine check-up, even if it hasn’t changed. It's normal to seek reassurance, especially in a teenage body, which can experience many changes.

It's completely normal to have concerns about your health, and taking steps to understand your body better is always a good choice. You're doing a great job by paying attention to it! If you have more questions or need reassurance, feel free to ask.

Unexpected Bleeding and Mild Fever After Treatment

As a 27-year-old woman, I recently completed a course of antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis (BV) nearly two weeks ago. Today, I've noticed some unusual bleeding that seems to be occurring between cycles, along with experiencing occasional mild fevers. Is there any reason to be alarmed about a connection between these symptoms and the BV treatment? Generally, I'm feeling fine, but it’s puzzling since my period isn't expected for another week.

Concern Over Persistent Swelling from Infected Bug Bite Despite Antibiotics

Greetings! I'm a 16-year-old female, weighing 75 pounds and standing at around 4'9". I utilize a wheelchair around the clock and live in Canada. I have several disabilities, but I’ll focus on the most pressing issue I’m facing. Recently, while at camp, I was bitten by four insects in the same area. We ruled out ticks, so they likely are just regular bug bites. By Wednesday night, the situation deteriorated—signs like redness, swelling, heat, and discomfort manifested, prompting a visit to the emergency room. During my examination, the doctor determined it was a mild infection and expressed urgency in treating it to prevent potential cellulitis. He prescribed doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily for a week, from Thursday to Thursday. Additionally, I’m currently taking sertraline at a dose of 150 mg daily, which shouldn't interfere with the antibiotic treatment. Despite adhering to the medication regimen, my foot remains swollen. Due to a pre-existing condition of edema linked to poor circulation, I’m considering that factor in this context. I've always dealt with purplish, mottled feet since birth. Today, I noticed some heat returning to the affected area, and it’s causing me considerable anxiety, as I fear this issue might persist. I’m aware it typically takes around 7 to 10 days for improvements to become noticeable, but I’m torn between waiting it out or seeking a second opinion. I kindly ask for your understanding, as I manage generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, so a respectful response would mean a lot to me. Thank you! :D

Should I Be Worried About This Indentation?

Background: I’m a 19-year-old female, standing at 5'4" and weighing 150 pounds. For over three years, I've worn snug bracelets on my forearm to the extent that they leave indentations. Recently, I consulted a physician regarding a lump I noticed; however, the doctor assured me that there was no lump present and that my arm appeared normal. She suggested that it might just be an indentation or possibly an issue with a compressed nerve. What I'm experiencing: - I’ve noted some weakness in my arm, but thankfully, that is gradually diminishing. - When lifting my arm, it occasionally feels a bit heavy, yet this sensation is also improving. - I have encountered mild numbness affecting my pinky, ring, and middle fingers. The area of my forearm where I felt the bump seems soft; it resembles one of those stress-relief squeeze toys you can attach to a phone case. It’s located around my wrist. While I’d typically share a photo for clarity, I understand that's not permissible here. Comparing my arms, my left arm isn’t particularly slender, but it isn’t as hefty as my right arm. I suspect this discrepancy arises from my habit of wearing a tight bangle in an inappropriate area, which then migrated down to my forearm. Additionally, I’ve accessorized with two moderately tight bracelets that leave marks after just a few minutes or even hours. I can fit two fingers comfortably within the bracelet’s clearance on my wrist. At times, I’ve adjusted the position further down my arm, or stacked on three bracelets instead of two. I have noticed a slight warmth in the vicinity of the bump, though I’m unsure if this is simply due to the irritation I’ve caused. Any guidance would be appreciated. Should I seek a second opinion, or am I overreacting as my parents suggest? Just to clarify, I have removed the bracelets now.

Discomfort in the Left Ear

I'm a 47-year-old woman, slightly above my ideal weight, and currently experiencing menopause. Lately, I've been dealing with discomfort in my left ear. It's not an internal pain, and it doesn't occur continuously, but there is significant tenderness around the ear. Any movement seems to intensify the pain quite a bit. I have sought help from both my general practitioner and an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT), yet neither has been able to identify the issue. Does anyone have suggestions or insights into what this could be? It's quite unusual and challenging to articulate. The pain fluctuates, but when it does occur, it can be quite severe. I appreciate any advice you can offer.

Implications of a C3 Vertebra Injury - Risk of Paralysis

I’ve recently learned that a friend from my past is currently hospitalized due to an injury to his C3 vertebra. Unfortunately, the information I have is limited, as a mutual acquaintance is passing along news. What I understand so far is that there is a possibility of paralysis, but the complete situation remains unclear. I’ve taken some time to research online, but I’m eager to gain deeper insights regarding the potential severity and long-term effects of such an injury. Is there a significant likelihood that he is now facing paralysis? Apparently, he underwent surgery today related to the injury. However, the specifics regarding his condition remain uncertain. I suspect that this injury may have stemmed from a car accident, considering he had previously been involved in several incidents. There was also a troubling history of alcohol-related driving. He is a 23-year-old male, approximately 6 feet tall and weighing around 180 pounds. The last I heard, he struggled with alcoholism and had issues related to substance use, but there were no other notable health problems or medications that he was aware of.
