Concerns Post-Laparoscopic Appendectomy: Tenderness and Discharge After Four Weeks

2/9/2026, 5:30:21 PMMale25-34

I’m reaching out via my backup account. Is there anyone else out there who's dealt with ongoing tenderness, sharp sensations, or a feeling of emptiness around the belly button weeks following laparoscopic surgery? How long did it take for you to heal completely? Was your discomfort alleviated with antibiotics and local treatment? My recovery has been progressing fairly well, especially with support from my boyfriend. However, I had to return home to avoid becoming overstayed as I had my emergency while visiting him towards the end of my trip. Now back at home, I live on the fifth floor without an elevator, which has made things tricky as I’ve had to transport groceries upstairs while being cautious to not exceed carrying 3 kg in each hand. Climbing the stairs seems to have exacerbated my condition. I’ve begun to feel soreness when getting in and out of bed frequently, and there’s some pressure near the left side of my navel port site. The stitches around the incision are starting to show a faint pink color. Currently, I had to travel for work and opted to wear cycling shorts to limit movement in my abdomen. However, I may have put too much strain on myself, as I noticed some dried blood and sticky discharge after using the restroom following my flight. I reached out to my doctor, who prescribed additional antibiotics (Augmentin). Fortunately, I’m not experiencing any fever, chills, or significant inflammation. Yet, there’s still a sharp sensation at the site, which becomes uncomfortable when I walk around without proper abdominal support. I’m becoming uneasy as my return to work is approaching in two weeks (eight weeks post-operation). My job involves high physical demands, with lots of movement and lifting, not to mention some heavy-duty tasks. I would like to know if what I’m experiencing is typical and what further precautions I should consider. I’ve promised myself to be cautious moving forward. Thanks in advance for your advice! I will be sharing some pictures. The first image was taken when I first noticed the issue, the second one after I cleaned the area, and the third one shows what it looked like after my first dose of antibiotics along with paracetamol.

It's understandable to feel concerned about ongoing tenderness and discharge weeks following your laparoscopic appendectomy, especially as you navigate recovery in a challenging living situation. Let’s break down your symptoms and provide some actionable next steps to help you feel more secure in your healing process.

Main Points

  • Ongoing tenderness, sharp sensations, and discharge after surgery can be common but should be monitored.
  • The pink color around your incision and the presence of discharge may indicate irritation or a mild infection.
  • It’s important to manage physical activity and take precautions to allow your body to heal properly.

Explanation

After laparoscopic surgery, it’s normal to experience some tenderness and localized sharp sensations as the body heals. However, persistent discomfort, especially with signs of discharge or changes in your incision site, should not be ignored. The pink discoloration may suggest some inflammation, which, combined with a sticky discharge, could signal an issue that needs attention, even if you are currently on antibiotics.

Your living situation and the physical demands of your job add to the complexity of your recovery. Climbing stairs and carrying heavy items can strain your abdominal muscles and may contribute to your discomfort. Since you noted some dried blood and the challenge of transporting groceries, it is wise to continue being cautious to avoid overexertion.

Next Steps

  1. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep a close eye on any changes in your incision site. If you notice increasing redness, swelling, worsening discharge, or the development of a fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

  2. Limit Physical Activity: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for the next few weeks. As you approach your return to work, consider discussing modified duties to ease your transition back into a physically demanding role.

  3. Support Your Abdomen: When moving around, consider wearing a supportive abdominal garment or band that helps stabilize the area when you're up and about.

  4. Hydration and Nutrition: Stay well-hydrated and maintain a balanced diet to support your overall recovery.

  5. Follow Up: Since you’ve already reached out to your doctor, continue to communicate your symptoms. If your situation doesn’t improve, particularly if discomfort increases or you notice new symptoms, a follow-up in person would be beneficial.

  6. Rest and Recovery: Prioritize rest whenever possible. Allow your body time to heal by minimizing activities that cause strain.

It's great to hear you have support from your boyfriend; lean on that support as you recover. Healing from surgery can take time and patience, and it’s important to prioritize your health over rushing back into demanding activities. If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to ask!

Seeking Insight on My Ultrasound Results

Age 25, female. I underwent an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound to investigate sporadic pelvic discomfort I’ve been experiencing. My contraceptive method is a combination pill. During the imaging, a structure was identified, described as a pocket of free fluid nestled between the intestinal loops. However, I have reservations about this interpretation, as the appearance seems less consistent with free fluid; it appears spherical and contains a hyperechoic speck, and it lacks a uniform hypo/anechoic pattern. I feel that the ultrasound lacked depth in its examination, and I would appreciate your perspective on this matter as well.

Unexpected Joint Swelling and Pain

Background Information: Female, 23 years old, Height: 5’10, Weight: approximately 180 lbs Non-smoker, No substance abuse Nexplanon contraceptive implant since October 2024 Greetings, I am reaching out regarding a series of troubling symptoms that have persisted since last Monday (a full week). Initially, I experienced a two-day migraine, which is quite unusual for me. This discomfort then evolved into a lingering dull headache accompanied by pain in my neck and upper shoulder area. On the fourth day, I sought assistance at urgent care, where the medical staff suggested my symptoms were likely due to prolonged screen time, as I work remotely. They prescribed me Flexeril for relief. The following day brought about new developments; I began to feel pain particularly in my elbows and knees, with the elbows being the most affected—extending them caused discomfort. Currently, the inflammation in my knees and ankles has worsened to the point where walking is quite difficult. My elbows continue to ache, along with discomfort in my fingers, wrists, and even my jaw. Additionally, I have been experiencing sporadic pain in my ribs and hips, which feels like a pinching sensation, although it doesn’t persist. In conjunction with all these issues, I am still suffering from headaches, which are particularly severe in the mornings. My neck and back discomfort has improved since starting the Flexeril, yet the joint pain and headaches remain unresolved. I have scheduled an appointment with my primary care physician for later this week. I would greatly appreciate any advice or thoughts on my situation, as the joint pain appears to be escalating. I anticipate a diagnosis that may point to stress, anxiety, or the repercussions of sitting at a desk for extended periods due to my remote work. Thank you for your help, medical professionals!! 🩺

Support Needed for Knee Recovery (M24)

Hello, it’s M24 reaching out. Back on December 16, I received a diagnosis of Patellar and Quadricep tendinosis along with a sprained PCL, which recommended a rest period of six weeks. Seeking further guidance, I consulted another doctor on January 17, who reiterated the initial recommendation but suggested an adjustment to extend my rest for an additional 3-4 weeks. Now, as I enter the fourth week of recovery, my knee continues to feel swollen and lacks stability, although I have noticed a significant decrease in pain. At this point, I find myself at a loss for what to do next. Engaging in physical activities serves as my primary form of relief, and I fear that my mental well-being may have deteriorated even more than my physical condition. I would appreciate any guidance you might have to offer. Thank you!

Weight Loss and Excessive Sleep: A Concern

Summary: Age 33, Female, standing at 5 feet 2 inches and weighing 120 pounds. Currently diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis and Cutaneous Lupus. Medications currently prescribed: - IVIG infusions - Imuran (azathioprine) 75 mg – recently initiated approximately one month ago following a hospitalization due to an Myasthenia Gravis crisis - Hydroxychloroquine 200 mg - Cymbalta 60 mg Current situation: In the past month, I have noticed some concerning changes in my well-being. Recently, I discovered that I've shed around 15 pounds over the course of just one month. I am battling severe fatigue and find myself sleeping the majority of the day, yet I still awaken feeling drained after a full night's slumber. Additionally, I'm facing issues such as swollen joints, pronounced rashes, and some thinning of my hair. This ongoing situation is significantly impacting my ability to work and carry out everyday tasks. Unfortunately, both my neurologist and rheumatologist have departed from their respective practices, resulting in a lack of specialist follow-up until June. My primary care physician is insistent that I need to consult with a specialist soon. My inquiry: Could the new symptoms I am experiencing be related to the side effects of Imuran or might there be another underlying issue? Some of the symptoms appear to be linked to lupus, though historically, my lupus has primarily affected my skin. The last time I had blood work done, which was about a month ago, my white blood cell count was slightly below normal.
