Numbness in Left Side of Face Upon Waking

6/17/2025, 12:40:21 PMMale25-34

I’m a 26-year-old woman, standing at 5 feet 1 inch and weighing 105 pounds. I don’t smoke but occasionally enjoy a drink. My current medications include Zoloft at 125 mg and Wellbutrin at 300 mg. Last night, I went to bed around 11 PM but was awakened at 2 AM by my cat's antics. Upon waking, I realized that the left side of my face felt oddly numb, reminiscent of the sensation you get after a dental numbing shot. The numbness seems to extend from half of my lips and involves my tongue somewhat, radiating towards my ear and up to my nose. I’m not experiencing any additional symptoms such as a headache or toothache. I’m wondering if this warrants a visit to urgent care tomorrow morning or if it can wait until after my work hours. Any advice?

The numbness you're experiencing on the left side of your face upon waking can be concerning, and it's important to consider what might be causing it. While this symptom might not necessarily indicate a serious condition, prompt evaluation is wise, especially given the specific nature of facial numbness and the fact that it was sudden.

Explanation

Facial numbness can arise from various reasons, including:

  • Nerve compression: Sleeping in an awkward position might compress a nerve, causing temporary numbness.
  • Migraines: Some people experience aura symptoms, including numbness, before or during a migraine, even without a headache.
  • Anxiety or panic attacks: These can lead to physical sensations that may feel like numbness.
  • Other conditions: Rarely, it can signify something more serious, like a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), especially if it occurs suddenly.

Next Steps

  1. Monitor Symptoms: Pay close attention to any changes. If the numbness persists or returns, or if you notice weakness, difficulty speaking, or other unusual symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

  2. Self-Care:

    • Try to avoid sleeping in positions that might put pressure on your head or neck.
    • Ensure you're hydrated and that your work environment is comfortable.
  3. Evaluate the Timing: Since this symptom happened after being disturbed from sleep, if the numbness does not resolve soon or if it worsens, it would be best to go to urgent care at your earliest opportunity.

  4. Document Your Symptoms: Take note of when the numbness occurs, how long it lasts, and any activities leading up to it, which can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

It's understandable to feel anxious about these symptoms, but being proactive will help ensure that you receive the appropriate care. Please take care of yourself, and don't hesitate to seek help if needed.

Experiencing Chest Pressure with Nicotine Pouches

Greetings! I'm a 33-year-old male who has struggled with obesity and has been an active vaper for approximately seven years. The primary health issue I face is high blood pressure, for which I'm on medication, along with having treated sleep apnea. After years of vaping, I thought it might be wise to transition to nicotine pouches in an effort to protect my lungs, so I made the switch around three months ago. Shortly thereafter, I began noticing an odd sensation of tightness in my chest whenever I lay down or reclined, but never when sitting upright. The discomfort would ease when I leaned forward, which left me puzzled. Unsure of what was happening, I decided to consult my doctor. During the visit, I underwent an EKG and various scans of my brain and lungs. The costs were significant, and ultimately, the doctors concluded that everything seemed normal and sent me home. Recently, while I was reclining in a gaming chair, I experienced a moment of realization. After starting to use a nicotine pouch, I felt that familiar tightness in my chest roughly twenty minutes later. Could it be that these pouches are triggering or exacerbating this uncomfortable sensation? Upon further reflection, I was able to pinpoint the exact day I switched to the pouches and coincidentally, I had raised the issue of my chest discomfort just five days later with my doctor. What could possibly be going on here? Thank you for taking the time to read my concerns.

Should I be worried about possible appendicitis?

Age: 29, Height: 5'9", Weight: 190 lbs Lifestyle: Non-drinker and non-smoker Current treatment: 12.5mg of tirzepatide administered weekly Medical history: Underwent cholecystectomy in 2016, no significant ongoing health issues or other medications. Over the past week, I've been experiencing sporadic discomfort in my right side, roughly three inches beneath my rib cage. The sensation can be characterized as a dull ache, reminiscent of a muscle cramp. I have not produced any fever, nor have I felt nauseous. The discomfort is not continual; I only notice it when I move in certain ways or take deep breaths. While primarily felt in the right side, there have been moments when I felt it spread across my entire lower abdomen. When the pain occurs, I would rate its intensity at about 2 on a scale of 10. I've always heard that appendicitis is associated with severe pain, which is not how I would describe my current experience. This ongoing issue is causing me some concern.

Feeling of Heaviness in My Head for Two Weeks: Seeking Advice

Greetings, everyone. I'm a 36-year-old male living in the United States, and I've been experiencing a persistent heaviness at the back of my head for nearly two weeks. Although I had some nausea initially, it has since subsided on its own. At times, I can perceive my heartbeat in my neck and head, which is a bit disconcerting. A few months back, around three to four months ago, I underwent a CT scan with contrast for my head and neck, as well as a CT Angiogram due to a lingering headache, and everything came back normal. Additionally, I had an MRI done without contrast, and that report was also clear. Recently, I visited an urgent care facility because the pressure in my head had intensified. The attending doctor performed a neurological examination and concluded that my results were normal. He prescribed muscle relaxants; however, they haven't provided any relief. It's worth noting that I am not currently experiencing any headaches, yet I can’t shake the fear that it could be something serious, potentially a brain tumor. I'd greatly appreciate any insights or advice on this matter. Thank you for your help!

Inconsistent Diagnosis Codes: What's the Deal?

Hello everyone! I wanted to share a bit of my personal experience. I am living with inflammatory bowel disease, specifically Crohn's disease, and have been dealing with significant anemia. This led me to consult a hematologist. I've undergone five iron infusions, and tomorrow, I'm scheduled to have some blood tests done to monitor my iron levels. While I was perusing the paperwork for these tests, I stumbled upon various diagnosis codes. Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to look them up online. Surprisingly, some of the codes aligned well with my actual diagnosis, while others seemed completely irrelevant. For instance, I saw PCOS listed, which has never been diagnosed by a healthcare provider, as well as unspecified anxiety disorder. Is it common for doctors to include such inconsistencies in diagnosis codes? Should I bring these discrepancies to my hematologist's attention during my next visit? I can't help but wonder if these codes are simply used for billing purposes or if there's more to it. Any insights would be appreciated!

Could It Be Hemorrhoids? Should I Consult a Physician?

I’m a 40-year-old weighing 155 pounds, and for the past week, I’ve experienced some bleeding. I’ve been attempting to alleviate the problem by increasing my fiber intake and drinking more water. However, yesterday, multiple factors may have aggravated my condition. Today, I noticed a significant amount of blood, which made me suspect that something had burst. I decided to take a warm sitz bath, but even after that, the swelling and irritation persisted, prompting me to document the situation with a photo. The condition looks quite alarming. I plan to share the image in the comments for further insights.
